An automotive mold is a specialized tool used to shape raw materials into the required dimensions for use in an automobile. Typically made of steel, these tools are designed to withstand high temperatures and pressure.
Manufacturers can also mix dyes into the raw material pellets before molding to produce parts with specific colors and finishes. They can also create textured or patterned surfaces in injection-molded plastic parts.
Injection Molding
Injection molding is a common production process for automotive parts. It begins with resin pellets that are heated and melted, then delivered into the mold through a system of runner channels and a sprue. After the plastic hardens, the mold opens and the molded part is ejected using ejector pins.
A sprue is the main channel in which all of the melted plastic initially flows as it enters the mold cavity. It contains a runner system that facilitates flow and internal water cooling channels to aid and speed up the cooling process. A sprue also has bosses, which are cylindrical projections with holes that can receive threaded screws or other types of fastening hardware.
Regular maintenance of an injection-molded part can prevent errors and improve the quality of the final product. This can include checking for a lack of clamping pressure or voids caused by insufficient pack-out. It can also help to avoid knit lines, which are small hair-like discolorations that form when 2 flows meet and are more pronounced in parts with abrupt geometry changes or holes.
CNC Machining
CNC Machining is a computer-controlled fabrication process that allows you to reduce manual intervention. This can significantly reduce production time and lead to greater efficiency. For example, if you wanted to bore holes on a piece of metal using traditional tools, you would need to secure the piece of metal in place, set up the drill, activate the spindle, and manually drill into the metal. All of this would take a lot of time and it is easy for human errors to occur at each step.
Another advantage of CNC machining is that it can produce complex parts in short lead times. This is ideal when you need to manufacture small volumes of a specific part. For instance, cylinder heads and petrol systems in cars require lots of intricate parts that are difficult to make without the help of a reliable CNC machine. This process is also able to meet tight tolerances that are required for some car parts.
Surface Finishing
A surface finish is a broad term for industrial processes that alter a product's surface to achieve a certain function. For example, a plastic part that is likely to be touched frequently may benefit from a textured surface finish that masks fingerprint smudges.
Getting your part's surface finish right is essential for quality, as well as the function of your part. For instance, some materials won't release with inconsistent or poor surface finishes — silicone, nylon, and thermoplastics are among them.
Inserts
Insert molding allows designers to produce plastic parts that incorporate other, non-plastic components. These “inserted” elements are often metal or other durable materials such as rubber. This type of process reduces assembly and labor costs, and increases design flexibility and reliability. It’s also a great choice for lightweight automotive parts and components, and medical devices that need increased wear resistance or tensile strength.
The most important factor to consider when using insert molding is the type of material used. The insert must be able to withstand the extreme temperatures and pressure of the process. It is also necessary to choose a resin that will protect the inserts.
The final step of insert molding is releasing the finished product from the mold. This can be accomplished by using a mixture of methods including hand polishing, CNC machining, CNC wire EDM, CNC ram EDM, and surface grinding. Ample draft angles are also essential to help release the part.
